Questions & Answers
We understand that chlorine and other disinfectants have a negative effect on the lifetime of piping systems. Do you have an estimation on how much the lifetime is reduced for hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide?
Disinfectants affect the piping system independently of pipe material. It is important to point out that even though the system is affected, the pipe performance with disinfectants in most cases is “good enough” for the intended application. Even with the presence of disinfectants the system will reach lifetimes beyond 50 and 100 years. It’s important to have knowledge of the exact service conditions (water quality) and how the pipe will be affected under these conditions. Studies have shown that chlorine dioxide is more aggressive compared with hypochlorite. However, chlorine dioxide is used at much lower concentrations.
